Statement on the Protection of the Memory of Konstantinos Gkinis

As the legal representative of the family of the deceased, Fire Brigade Superintendent Konstantinos Gkinis, I feel compelled to intervene publicly and to urgently demand the immediate cessation of the uncontrolled rumours, arbitrary scenarios and public targeting that has been unfolding over recent days against a man who is no longer alive to defend himself.

The spreading of unfounded claims, speculations and “information” that has not been confirmed by the competent authorities constitutes a brutal affront to the memory of the deceased, but above all gravely offends the dignity and mental health of his family and his minor children.

It is recalled that the causes and circumstances of the death are being investigated exclusively by the competent judicial and forensic authorities. Any public reproduction of unconfirmed claims prior to the issuance of an official finding does not constitute information, but social cannibalism.

Society has a duty to demonstrate elementary respect, self-restraint and responsibility. Freedom of speech is not synonymous with impunity, nor does it justify the spreading of false or offensive references about a deceased person and his family.

We demand with absolute clarity:
That all public speculation cease immediately.
That unconfirmed information not be reproduced.
That the process of Justice be respected.
That the memory of the deceased and the dignity of his loved ones be protected.

Any further affront cannot be considered innocent, and we reserve all legal rights.

On behalf of the family of the deceased
Kostas Parìgoris
Attorney at the Supreme Court (Areios Pagos)
