According to the indictment, the 31-year-old was driving without a valid driving licence and under the influence of alcohol at a speed of 150 km/h on a provincial road. The court ruled that the defendant’s appeal would not have a suspensive effect on the execution of the sentence, and he was therefore taken to prison.
The attorney representing the family of the late Angelos, Mr. Kostas Parìgoris, following the conclusion of the trial, made the following statements to the Media:
“Today’s court ruling is a vindication for Angelos’ family. This case demonstrated something very important: Dangerous, antisocial driving cannot be treated as «negligence» nor excused as «youthful recklessness». This is behaviour that kills, and one which society cannot tolerate. The state has fulfilled its duty through the institution of Justice.”
